New Online Tool Helps Newark Residents Find Affordable Housing

“I am committed to producing and preserving more affordable housing so that more individuals and families can establish or strengthen roots in Newark,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said. “Part of this mission is making it easier for people to search for the type of affordable housing they need. No matter where I go in Newark, people will approach me and ask for help in finding a home they can afford. This housing locator will help fill a gap that has long existed.”

The newly launched online tool complements Newark's efforts to increase availability and access to affordable housing in the city after a report issued last year by Rutgers Law School Center on Law, Inequality and Metropolitan Equity (CLiME) revealed that the city's housing stock falls short to provide affordable units for low-income residents by about 16,000 units. Following the release of the report, the mayor’s office teamed up with CLiME, the city Office of Economic and Housing Development and local partners to draft a multi-pronged approach to address what Baraka called “a growing problem in this town and a growing problem in this region.”

Additionally, Baraka last year announced his goals to increase access to affordable housing with plans to build 3,000 new homes by 2026 and to create or preserve at least 6,000 affordable housing units of low-income residents.

“We want to make sure those people who are suffering the most can benefit from this economy, either by working or, most importantly, by having a place to live that's affordable," the mayor said when he announced his affordable housing goals in August 2021.

Through the housing locator site, officials said the units listed are a combination of private-market properties, federal-funded projects and Newark Housing Authority sites. Property owners, managers and landlords can use the website to advertise their available affordable for-sale properties and rental units as well.

Providers have to register online or by phone in order to showcase their availability to potential tenants. The website can also assist landlords who are interested in offering housing opportunities to special needs groups such as veterans, differently-abled and former homeless residents.

The Newark Housing Locator is backed by a call center of Housing Specialists who can assist users with their apartment search in Newark. Housing Specialists are available toll-free in English and Spanish Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1-877-428-8844. The call center helps tenants search available listings and helps landlords to register, add and update listings with no time limit on calls giving callers the time they need to ask any questions they might have.
