Need help paying your rent? Lottery for N.J. assistance ends Monday

Published: Jul. 22, 2022

The deadline for tenants in New Jersey who need help paying their rent to enter a lottery for state assistance ends Monday.

New Jersey opened the lottery earlier this month and will give aid to 4,000 households throughout the state. The lottery closes at 5 p.m. on July 25.

Renters have been able to fill out pre-applications to enter a lottery for the State Rental Assistance Program (SRAP) program in the Elderly, Family, Disabled and Homeless categories, according to the Department of Community Affairs. One thousand pre-applications will be selected from each category.

“Pre-applications for SRAP assistance will be accepted from very low-income households. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to apply or be an emancipated minor,” the department said at the time they announced the lottery. “Those selected in the lottery for the wait list will then be eligible to receive SRAP vouchers as they become available.”

To qualify in the “elderly” category, applicants must serve as head of household and be 62 years of age or older. For the “family” category, the head of household must be 18 years of age or an emancipated minor, with or without children. The “disabled” category requires the head of household or spouse to be permanently disabled. And homeless applicants must lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, according to the department.

Income limits for applicants will depend on the county and the number of people living in the household, the agency said.

Applicants will be asked to provide names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, and income information for all individuals living in the household, while disabled and homeless applicants must provide verification of their disability or homelessness at the time of selection from the waiting list.

Importantly, applicants must have an email address to apply, according to the department. But if people need help they can call (609) 292-4080 and select Option 9.

The pre-applications can be found at WaitlistCheck.com/NJ559.
