How Newark Residents Can Weigh In On University Hospital CEO Selection Process

Community input for the CEO selection process will be important for Newarkers given University Hospital's critical role in the community.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, almost all available rooms at University Hospital were occupied by patients infected with the virus, including patient care units, emergency department space, critical care space, pediatric and labor-delivery units.

A staffing shortage spurred by the pandemic soon exacerbated the dire situation. At one point, the hospital staff was so overwhelmed with patients that military service members had to step in to help administer care in roles such as nurses, physicians and respiratory therapists.

Many violently injured patients come through the doors each year at the Newark hospital as well. The University Hospital Trauma Center staff sees more than 4,000 patients each year with potentially life-threatening conditions.

Upon announcement of Elnahal's nomination to his new role, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka underscored why it's important to have the right leader at the helm of University Hospital.

“University Hospital plays such a vital role in our community, and we will need Dr. Elnahal’s replacement to be someone who understands medicine in an urban environment as much as he has,” Baraka said. “His impact will be genuinely felt for generations to come in Newark, New Jersey.”
