Christie Whitman’s anti-Trump Republican group just endorsed these N.J. Democrats

The group of disaffected Republicans whose leaders include former Gov. Christie Whitman endorsed two New Jersey House Democrats Thursday in their efforts to purge their party of Donald Trump and his acolytes.

The Renew America Movement, which Whitman helped create, named Reps. Andy Kim, D-3rd Dist., and Josh Gottheimer, D-5th Dist., to its list of 21 lawmakers or candidates, both Democrats and Republicans, it was backing to prevent Trump from gaining a stronger foothold in the party and the GOP from taking control of Congress in 2022.

Also on the list was Rep. Susan Wild, D-Pa. One of her predecessors in the Lehigh Valley congressional district, Republican Charlie Dent, is also on the board of the Renew America Movement.

“We’re going to go where we believe we can affect the outcome,” Whitman said on a Youtube chat.

She said the endorsed candidates were “people who put the country ahead of their political party, who will stand up against lies, who will reach out to the other side. These are people who have a history of wanting to get things done for the public.”

Endorsing Democrats is part of the effort to prevent House Republicans under Leader Kevin McCarthy of California from gaining the majority, said Miles Taylor, former Homeland Security Department chief of staff under Trump and a co-founder of the group.

“If Kevin McCarthy is the speaker of the House of Representatives, it won’t be his hand wrapped around the gavel, it will be Donald Trump’s hand,” Taylor said.

The group also endorsed eight of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in January for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, as well as the only one of the seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict him up for re-election in 2022: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Whitman, a self-described “lifelong Republican” who once co-chaired a Republican national convention, delivered the Republicans’ response to a Bill Clinton State of the Union address from the Assembly chamber in Trenton and served in a GOP administration, broke with her party over Trump and endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.

She also spoke on behalf of Biden at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Whitman served as New Jersey governor from 1994 to 2001.
