Booker just brought Ketanji Brown Jackson to tears at her confirmation hearing for U.S. Supreme Court

His voice cracking and his eyes tearing, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker spent his time at Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing touting Ketanji Brown Jackson’s the historic nomination to be the first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court justice.

His words left Jackson wiping her eyes as well.

“When I look at you, this is why I get emotional,” Booker said. “It’s hard to look at you and not see my mom, not to see my cousins, one of them who had to come here and sit behind you. She had to have your back.”

“I see my ancestors and yours,” Booker said. “Nobody’s going to steal the joy.”

Booker’s comments came eight hours into the third day of hearings, and he began by defending Jackson against the “meritless to the point of demagoguery” attacks leveled against her by several Republican senators, calling them “a new low.”

He then talked about what it meant to him to see Jackson in the witness chair.

As he has in the past, Booker cited those who came before him, such as Harriet Tubman, fighting for equality and civil rights and breaking down the barriers that allowed the first Black elected to the Senate from New Jersey to question the first Black woman nominated to the nation’s highest court.

“You are there because of that kind of love, and nobody’s taking this away from me,” Booker said. “Don’t worry, my sister. Don’t worry. God has got you. How do I know that? Because you’re here and i know what it’s taken for you to sit in that seat.”

In his opening remarks on Monday, Booker called the hearing “a day of joy” because of the historic nature of President Joe Biden’s selection of Jackson. Even attacks directed against Jackson and against himself couldn’t dim his ardor, Booker said.

“When that final vote happens and you ascend to the highest court in the land, I’m going to rejoice,” Booker said. “And I’m going to tell you right now that the greatest country in the world, the United States of America, will be better because of you.”
