Shooting leaves one dead in Newark's West Ward

NEWARK — A 27-year-old Irvington man was shot and killed near Newark's Valisburg Park this afternoon, police said.

Amir Hines was shot several times around 12:45 p.m. on Mountainview Avenue, just a few blocks from Valisburg Park in the city's West Ward, according to Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Hines was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where he died a few minutes later.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said the victim was targeted, but declined to discuss a motive in the slaying. No arrests have been made.

The victim had multiple prior arrests for drug offenses, resisting arrest and receiving stolen property, records show.

The killing marks Newark's 90th homicide of the year, compared to 78 during the the same time frame in 2012, DeMaio said. There have been four homicides in the city in the past six days.
