Rice blames Quintana administration for aid debacle in Newark; hopeful of Christie's largesse

TRENTON – Veteran state Sen. Ronald L. Rice (D-28) said he’s not especially worried about Newark right now in this budget process. It’s dangerous, but doable, he insisted.

“Newark is going to have to submit applications for some of its transitional aid – the date has been extended as it pertains to transitional aid,” said Rice, a backer of Mayor-elect Ras Baraka.

He blamed the administration of Acting Mayor Luis Quintana for not getting its applications in on time.

“Newark is in a precarious situation with the acting mayor,” said Rice. “What we’re going to get here is we’re going to get a budget, and the governor determines what to accept, what he will conditionally veto, and what he will line-item out.

“That’s just the way it is with any governor,” Rice added.
