NEWARK — Newark’s City Council has frozen all municipal spending until Mayor Cory Booker delivers a budget proposal.
NEWARK - When Garry McCarthy bid farewell to Newark this morning, he hardly mustered Pericles' funeral oration - and certainly sounded no MacArthur-like notes about returning.
"Thank you, good luck," said the Chicago-bound chief, barely giving reporters a chance to right their pencils before he backed away from the lectern and yielded to Mayor Cory Booker.
NEWARK - At Science High School, Gov. Chris Christie, Mayor Cory Booker and Acting Education Director Chris Cerf this morning welcomed New Yorker and self-described teacher at heart Cami Anderson as Christie's selection for superintendent of the Newark Schools System, where 55% of the students graduate from high school and 98% of them have to take college remedial courses.
As Newark prepares to formally digest the announcement of former New York City Superintendent Cami Anderson as Gov. Chris Christie's choice to serve as superintendent of schools, the advisory board last night selected Eliana Pintor Marin as chair of the schools advisory board.
NEWARK - Last night's 5-4 victory for Eliana Pintor Marin hinged on the aye vote of Schools Advisory Board Member Nakia White, who was promptly showered with charges of sell-out.
Pintor Marin was backed by North Ward Democratic leader Steve Adubato, Sr. and won last week despite most African American leaders backing an opposition slate of candidates.
Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson has defeated Tave Padilla by 44 votes to earn the third seat on the Newark Schools Advisory Board.
Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin said Baskerville-Richardson is scheduled to be sworn in tomorrow, along with fellow winners Eliana Pintor Marin and Alturrick Kenney.
Baskerville-Richardson led by 55 votes after last week's machine voting, and held on to win following tonight's provisional ballot count.
Former Gov. Richard Codey's (D-27) voice went out on a robocall this evening to Newark voters in affirmation of the Children's First team backed by South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka: Mathias, Kenney and Baskerville-Richardson.
"It is important that candidates win that will put the children and community first over outside influences," said Codey's voice in the robocall.
NEWARK — Eliana Pintor Marin and Alturrick Kenney emerged victorious in today’s Newark school board voting, but a third seat remains up for grabs in a showdown between the city’s political power brokers.
Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson led Tave Padilla by 41 votes tonight, leading to a potential recount.
