Open Doors 2013: Festival HQ at 85 Market St. hosts opening event

Artist Piotr Czerwinski has a solo show at 85 Market Street, headquarters of Open Doors 2013, the Newark arts festival running Oct. 10-20.


NEWARK — Open Doors 2013 kicks off Oct. 10 with a party at 85 Market St., site of Market Street Convergence and headquarters of the 10-day arts festival that will showcase the city's vibrant visual arts scene.

Presented by Gallery Aferro and the Newark Arts Council, the launch party from 6 to 10 p.m. includes food from Adega Grill and music from DJ Flo.

Guests can enjoy several large group exhibitions in the converted retail space, 9 solo shows, a performance art marathon, interactive public art pieces and open studios.

The 12th annual festival continues Friday, Oct. 11 with a gallery crawl. Rutgers University provides free shuttle service, and the festival HQ will distribute walking tour maps of some three dozen galleries, museums, studios and public art installations across the city.

Saturday features an attempt to break the world's record for largest monotype print, and Sunday is the festival's signature opens doors studio tour of the work of independent and resident artists.
