Rashard Casey, The North Ward Center's director of Youth Development and Recreation, was honored for his work with Newark children with the Spirit of Hope Award by the Give The Kids Hope Foundation at its Annual David Harris 2014 Golf Invitational.

Casey was chosen for the honor for "devoting his time and effort to helping underprivileged children. He was nominated for the award by Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr. and presented with the award by David Black, publisher of Suburban Essex Magazine.

"I can think of no better person to receive this honor than Rashard Casey," DiVincenzo said. "The programs he runs at The North Ward Center provide thousands of children with the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports, academic enrichment and homework assistance. This structured environment keeps our children engaged, helps them develop good citizenship and keeps them on the right path."

"It's an honor to be recognized," said Casey. "But we could not serve all the children we do without all the volunteers who give so willingly of their time. This recognition is for them too."

Adrianne Davis, the executive director and co-founder of The North Ward Center, said she is proud of Casey and the program that he runs.

"Rashard is one of the unsung heroes at The North Ward Center and this honor is certainly long overdue," Davis said. "He is so devoted to helping underprivileged children in the city."

As director of Youth Development and Recreation, Casey oversees programs that serve more than 3,000 children, who are learning teamwork and leadership skills as well as engaging in healthy activities that keep them off the streets. Under his leaderhip, the Youth Development program has started offering tutoring for children who are struggling in school.

Casey, who joined The North Ward Center 11 years ago, was raised in Hoboken. He was a star quarterback at Hoboken High School, where he was named the New Jersey High School Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All American. He went on to play quarterback for the Nittany Lions at Penn State University.

"Rashard is truly a role model for all children in Newark," said Stephen N. Adubato, the founder of The North Ward Center. "We are thrilled that Rashard was recognized by an organization that itself is so well known for helping so many underprivileged children."

Founded in 2010 by Stephen Tilton, Jr., and Judith Schumacher-Tilton of the Tilton Automotive Group, the Give the Kids Hope Foundation supports educational and recreational programs for underprivileged children in New Jersey. The organization is focused on rebuilding Camp Hope in West Milford, which has, for several decades, given underprivileged children the chance to experience summer camp.
