NEWARK — As it got closer to 12 o’clock, Newark’s senior citizens turned up the noise an extra notch.
They tossed tinsel and blew noisemakers as the clock approached noon.
Some danced the "Electric Slide,’’ others tapped their fingers to "La Bamba," a Latin song played by a guy strumming a guitar and blowing a harmonica.
The men had on purple party hats, the women wore silver tiaras with stars. Goodbye to 2011 and hello to another day above ground. This crowd of ageless wonders ushered in the New Year — counting down and everything — on Friday. It didn’t matter that this bash was a week late or that the sun was shining. Newark’s Department of Child and Family Well-Being’s Office on Aging wanted to help seniors ring in the new year because most don’t get that chance while the ball drops in Times Square.
"I can’t keep my eyes open after 8:30 p.m.,’’ said Connie Garcia, 92. "I’m in dreamland.’’
Newark always has programs for seniors, but coordinator Iris Alvarez said they came up with this ditty because many are forgotten during the holidays. Some are scared to venture out beyond church, so this gathering was a safe way for them to see friends from the other senior centers sponsored by the city.
"They’re so tickled to be here,’’ Alvarez said.
Some proudly gave their ages; others didn’t — not because a lady isn’t supposed to reveal such things. They have younger boyfriends and didn’t want their beaus to read it in the newspaper. They danced as much as they could, even by themselves when "Run Around Sue,’’ a 1960s hit, came through stereo speakers.
It was one of many times Dorothy Lathan hit the floor, saying every day is like New Year’s.
"I have fun all of the time,’’ she said. "There’s never a dull moment in my life.’’
Nobody was lonely this day, or forgotten. They were grateful to be thought of, but mostly thankful to be alive. The older seniors stay young because of the young ones like Christine Hayes, 68.
"I stay gone,’’ Hayes said. "I’m a rolling stone. My grandchildren are always trying to find me."
Some days, Hayes says, age catches up with her and she feels like she’s 70, but on most days she’s a roaring 20.
On Friday, she was 20-something all the way.
"And I look good,’’ she said.
So did 67-year-old Gloria Forte, who was decked out in Christmas red from the hat on her head to her skirt suit and boots. It was offset with a black spider broach and matching black necklace and bauble on her wrist.
"This is how we do it,’’ Forte said, speaking of her style. "We don’t do it later. We do it now while we’ve still got time.’’
For Elsie Best, the shindig brought back memories of a family tradition when she was growing up in Maryland. She said the first week of January was a way of saying goodbye to the Christmas that just passed and preparing for the new year and the Christmas to come. There were more presents to open. The tree was taken down and her parents always put God first during the holidays.
"I thank my family for that,’’ she said.
At the party, the countdown was the same as on television, except that Times Square was the South Ward Senior Center on Clinton Avenue. As they threw tinsel and sang "Auld Lang Syne," the lady who is normally knocked out by 8:30 p.m. was throwing her hands in the air.
Connie Garcia got up and took a step toward her second husband, Ramira, who’s 89. They have been together 11 years, having met at one of the city’s senior centers.
She said she had decided to tie the knot again after 50 years. The director was her maid of honor; a friend his best man. He doesn’t talk that much these days, but she reminded him why she loves him.
While everyone was dancing and screaming, she leaned over and kissed the man who wanted her to be his wife when she was 81.
"We don’t know how long we have to live,’’ she said. "Only God knows that.’’
