NEWARK — Authorities are searching for a 23-year-old man who has been charged with the July 10 shooting death of Leon Truesdale, whose body was discovered in an apartment complex parking lot.

A Superior Court judge signed a warrant for the arrest of Omar Solomon of Elizabeth, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said today.

The prosecutor’s office released Solomon’s photograph to the public, asking anyone who may know his whereabouts to call its homicide tips line at (877) 847-7432.

Truesdale was shot multiple times around 4:45 a.m. that day at a building complex on the 100 block of Newton Street, the prosecutor’s office said. Police responded to the scene on a report of shots fired in the hallway, but when they arrived, found only a pool of blood.

Officers searched the area and discovered Truesdale’s body about a block away on Bruce Street, in the parking lot of New Community Gardens apartment complex. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A father of five children, Truesdale, 30, had been living with his sister at a Newton Street home, the prosecutor’s office said.

Solomon was paroled on June 14, after serving nearly two years in prison for theft and unlawful possession of a handgun, according to the state Department of Corrections website. He still had nine months remaining on his sentence at the time of his release.
