Newark to open collection sites for 26K shoebox gifts for Christmas

NEWARK — Hundreds of volunteers will be packing and transporting thousands of gift-filled shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child next week.

This year, volunteers in northern New Jersey aim to fill 26,000 shoeboxes for needy children from Nov. 18 to 25, according to Samaritan's Purse which has run the global charity drive for 20 years.

The collection sites opening next week in Newark are:

• Vailsburg Assembly of God, 962 S Orange Avenue. Operating hours: Mon-Fri, Nov. 18-22: 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Sat, Nov. 23: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Sun, Nov. 24: 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Mon, Nov. 25: 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

• Lighthouse Assembly of God, 542 N 7th Street. Operating hours: Mon-Fri, Nov. 18-22: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Sat, Nov. 23: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sun, Nov. 24: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Mon, Nov. 25: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

In Union County:

• Christ Fellowship Church, 1121 Elizabeth Avenue. Operating hours: Mon-Fri, Nov. 18-22: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Sat, Nov. 23: 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. Sun, Nov. 24: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Mon, Nov. 25: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Started in 1993, Operation Christmas Child hopes to distribute 9.8 million shoeboxes worldwide this Christmas.
