Newark Runoff Elections: Quintana v. Baraka tomorrow with council control at stake

By Max Pizarro | June 9th, 2014

Control of the Newark City Council hangs in the balance in Newark, where lame duck Mayor Luis Quintana is going all in behind the runoff candidacy tomorrow of incumbent Central Ward Councilman Darrin Sharif with an eye on council leadership.

That pits Quintana against the incoming mayor, Ras Baraka.

Seeking control of the city council, Mayor-elect Baraka backs the challenger to Sharif, former Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins.

Sources told PolitickerNJ that it shapes up as follows:

If Sharif wins, council people Augusto Amador, Carlos Gonzalez, Anibal Ramos, Quintana and Sharif will vote as a block in support of Quintana as council president, thereby depriving Baraka of control.

If Chaneyfield-Jenkins wins, Eddie Osborne, John Sharpe James, Chaneyfield-Jenkins, Mildred Crump and Joe McCullem – heavily favored to win the West tomorrow based – will back Crump for the council presidency, thereby empowering the mayor with a majority on the governing body.
