Newark mayor praises Audible for tech programming in Brick City

NEWARK — Newark mayor this week praised Audible Inc. following a report that the tech company would be starting a venture fund and accelerator in the Brick City.

Audible founder and CEO Donald Katz told an audience at a TEDx Navesink event at Monmouth University earlier this month that the company has been working with political and technology leaders to invest in the city, according to New Jersey Tech Weekly.

Baraka said in a statement to NJ Advance Media that Audible was recognizing the city as a future tech hub.

"Audible recognizes Newark as a center for business, a source of capable and committed entrepreneurs and employees, a hub for transportation and home to a united administration and people," the mayor said.

"In short, they appreciate and acknowledge their role in 'Newark 3.0', a revitalized and reimagined urban leader for the entire nation and the world."

In his state of the city, Baraka said is administration would usher the city in to "Newark 3.0." with enhanced technology efforts.

Katz said Newark's renaissance could be helped by technology companies moving to the city, according to New Jersey Tech Weekly.

"We need to invest to make this happen...There really is a way to have capital become missionary rather than mercenary," Katz said in the report.
