NEWARK — A 33-year-old Newark man was gunned down Saturday evening in the South Ward, becoming the city’s 73rd homicide victim of the year, authorities said.

Alwali McKie was shot multiple times and left for dead on the 30 block of Aldine Street, according to a statement from acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.

Police responded to a 911 call around 7:30 p.m. reporting shots in the area, the statement said. They found McKie lying on the ground a short time later. He died at 8:15 p.m. after being taken to University Hospital by ambulance.

Murray and DeMaio said detectives had made no arrest and this afternoon were still working to determine a motive for the killing.

The homicide occurred around the same time three people were shot on the 100 block of Avon Avenue, near the border of the city’s Central and South wards, in what authorities called a separate incident. Sgt. Ronald Glover of the Newark Police Department said Saturday night that their injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.

A mother holding a child nearby said she heard five shots ring out from a nearby row of apartment buildings. She declined to give her name. Police had cordoned off the block where the shootings occurred.
