NEWARK — Newark's city council elected on Wednesday East Ward councilman Augusto Amador to become its vice president, filling a vacant position.

Amador will work with council president Mildred Crump to steer the council agenda with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka's administration. Six council members voted in favor of the appointment while South Ward councilman John Sharpe James voted against it and Crump and at-large councilman Eddie Osborne abstained.

The council's move follows talk among political insiders and the media about whether the council would replace Crump.

Central Ward councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins on Wednesday sought to squash those questions, saying "there have been mistakes made along the way" but Crump has the council's support.

"This council is solidly behind Mildred Crump being the council president and we're solidly behind Ras J. Baraka, who is our mayor," she said.

"We're gonna fight amongst each other. That's the nature of government."

Chaneyfield-Jenkins then moved to nominate Amador as vice president.

Crump said she was glad that Chaneyfield-Jenkins brought "to the forefront" an issue that had been talked about in the community but criticized some council members — who she did not name — for holding private meetings.

"It appears we still have a block voting," she said. "There are other meetings that are still going on."

Crump continued to say that she hoped the council would continue to support mayor's agenda.

Council members who supported Amador's nomination said that the council almost always votes in favor of Newark mayor's Ras Baraka's agenda, but there will be disagreements at a times.

"It's not a vote against anybody," Amador, who previously served as council vice president, said of his nomination after the meeting.

"The fact the councilwoman Chaneyfield moved and was supported by councilman Ramos demonstrates that we can all work together."

Baraka said in a statement that he would work with Amador as council vice president.

"Augie Amador was the Vice President when I was on the Council and he did a good job," he said. "I think he will continue to do a good job as Vice President."

The council also named West Ward councilman Joe McCallum and at-large councilman Luis Quintana to be the council's representatives for the North Jersey Water Supply Commission and the Passaic Valley Water Commission respectively.
