Jersey City and Newark are the second and third worst cities in the country for an active lifestyle, respectively, according to a new report.

Finance website WalletHub looked at the 100 most populated cities in the United States and evaluated each one in two categories -- budget and participation as well as sports facilities and outdoor entertainment.

In the study, Newark came in at No. 98 and Jersey City came in at No. 99, only ahead of Laredo, Texas. Nearby New York City didn't fare much better, at No. 94.

A quick look at the criteria WalletHub used explains why dense urban areas might rank poorly: the number of different facilities per capita weighed in heavily for the sports facilities and outdoor environment category.

Swimming pools, ice skating rinks, skateboard parks and baseball fields? JC, Newark and NYC just have too little open space and too many people for the ratio to work in their favor.

The study says Jersey City had the second lowest number of tennis courts per capita and Newark had the lowest number of fitness centers per capita nationwide.

And the three cities with the lowest number of public golf courses per capita? Jersey City, Newark, New York City, in that order.

The area's high cost of living also doomed the three cities. Jersey City, for example, has one of the highest monthly fitness club fees in the country, the study says.

The bottom 10 was dominated by Texan cities like Houston, Irving and Fort Worth (the 10th through eighth worst) and Arlington, the fourth worst. Also at the bottom were North Las Vegas and Hialeah, Fla.

The best cities for an active lifestyle? In order: Omaha; Portland; Pittsburgh; Reno, Nev.; Orlando; Tampa; Irvine, Calif.; Tucson; Colorado Springs; and Atlanta.
