NEWARK — Three people are hospitalized and one man is dead in separate shootings tonight, authorities confirmed.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Newark police responded to a shooting on the 100 block of Avon Avenue near the border of the city's Central and South Wards. Sgt. Ronald Glover of the Newark Police Department said three people were shot but their injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.

A mother holding a child nearby said she heard five shots ring out from a nearby row of apartment buildings. She declined to give her name. Police had cordoned off the block where the shootings occurred.

At roughly the same time a man was shot on Aldine Street in the South Ward. Authorities confirmed that man died of his wounds. It was the 73rd homicide in Newark this year.

Officials said both shootings were in early stages of investigation and they would provide more details throughout the night.
