Newark gardener remains young-spirited and agile at ripe age of 95

NEWARK —Her name is Carrie Pope, and she lives on South 11th Street in Newark. On most days, you’ll find her in the front yard crawling around on knees made tough from digging in her garden all her life.
"You oughta see them,’’ she says, pointing to her legs. "They’re like elephant knees.’’

But Pope’s legs, even to her surprise, don’t bother her at the age of 95.
She doesn’t know why she has a sprightly bounce to her gait, an agility that makes neighbors stand with their hands on their hips.
"You just don’t see this,’’ said John Titus. "Look at her.’’
Pope is out in the yard, paying us no mind, eager to get her hands in the earth. She’s a little thing, maybe 5 feet tall with brown eyes and a coffee color complexion. Her blue and white checkered blouse has a bow tied at the neckline, her trusty knees held in place with knee pads strapped around black pants. A hair net, barely visible, keeps each pretty strand of her white hair in place as she moves between the Chrysanthemums and Marigolds, pulling weeds, checking out her colorful landscape.
There’s a horde of phlox on her patch of land, a potato vine nearby, so many plants that give her peaceful joy. When the vegetables out back are ready, she plucks tomatoes from the vine, cuts collard greens and cabbage from the ground and gives them to friends and her church family at Bethany Baptist in Newark.
Gardening is her love, her strength, the laughter. Hers is a life lived well.
She came to Newark in the 1920s with her parents, the late Hayward and Dora Johnson, and her sister, Braddie Johnson, who has also passed away. Her dad was a carpenter, her mom, a housewife who got Pope into flowers. By the time she was 25, Pope was a widow; her husband the victim of tuberculosis. They had no children.
She did factory work most of her life, but she never stopped gardening. For years she planted flowers at the church, where members used to find her out there as early as 6 a.m.
"They tell me this got me in the shape I’m in,’’ she said. "I guess the man upstairs has been good to me, because I’m a testimony at this age of what I can still do.’’
On the dance floor, she can’t jitterbug like she used to at Newark Symphony Hall but she can do the "Electric Slide,’’ a popular line dance, at social gatherings. She threads a needle, reads without glasses and can rattle off the small letters on the eye chart at the doctor’s office.
Her recall is just as sharp. For some reason, Pope can remember the answer she gave on an oral final exam in Spanish class. Sitting in her dining room, she suddenly jumps up as if she was back in that in class in 1933. She throws her shoulders back and looks straight into the past at her teacher.

If she could, Pope would still be driving her pride and joy — a 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity that she keeps in beautiful condition. There’s plastic over the seats and inside panel to keep it clean and the odometer is stuck on 40,760 miles, where it has been since she was 85 and drove for the last time. Oh, she still tried to sneak out a couple of times for a joy ride to the bank and supermarket.
"They stopped me,’’ she said in a whisper. "My neighbors said put it back when they saw me.’’
Although grounded, Pope says she felt like a teenager at 88 when she helped the handyman wallpaper her dining room. In the winter, she’ll shovel her front walk, and neighbors like Brenda Liggins politely say, "What do you think are you doing?’’
She doesn’t see the value in somebody having an interest in her story.
"Why do they want to interview an old woman like me,’’ she said.
She still has her diplomas and class pictures from grammar school up through high school. Her hospitality is southern. Her energy astounding. And she’s funny as ever.
"Can you find me," she said, handing me the 1933 class picture dominated by white students at Central High School.
Pope wants for nothing. The community and church family look after her as do the few men in her life she jokingly calls her sweet potatoes.
"You know what I’m going to do," she said. "I’m going to make you one of my sweet potatoes."
She laughed. So did I.
But every now and then the smile goes away. She wants this to be her last year of life.
"They don’t like it when I say that."
She says she’s tired, doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone.
But she has a plant in her garden with an interesting name. It’s called "live forever."
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have Carrie Pope in our lives that long. If not, a few hours of her afternoon will have to do.
