A Few Truths about Newark

This is a true statement: If Newark schools do not rise above failure, then Newark’s future is
bleak. This is another true statement: An extremely important election about the future of
Newark’s schools is coming up on April 27. And this is a final true statement: If history is any
guide, a pitifully small number of Newark residents will vote in the coming election…and that
includes many of the hundreds of parents who showed up at meetings in February and March to
yell, scream, complain, and moan about the terrible state of Newark’s schools and its bleak
future.
Newark is a town of strange contradictions. Nearly a half million people live in a city rich in
resources but known for failure. The city is governed by a youthful, exuberant mayor who is
nationally known and who radiates hope for today and tomorrow, but far too many Newarkers
see no hope for their present and future. The city is known for its vibrant Ironbound core of
crowded, lively restaurants and professional sports, but just outside those boundaries lie some of
the meanest and persistent slums in America. In fact, Newark is a city of sharp divides.
Yet virtually all Newarkers would agree that quality schools that can provide the city’s children
with a quality education are essential if Newark is to succeed as a city. Virtually all Newarkers
would agree that Newark’s children must be well educated and well trained to compete
effectively in the workplace in the years ahead. Virtually all Newarker’s would agree that the
city’s children must be prepared to take their places as tomorrow’s leaders.
But a great, a very great, majority of “virtually all Newarkers” will not vote in an election that
will have a huge impact on the Newark school system. They will allow others to select the
people who will determine how a nearly $100 million gift to the city’s schools will be spent.
They will forfeit their chance to determine whether tax money should be allowed to finance
private schools at the expense of public schools. In essence, they will allow others to make
decisions that will determine their children’s futures.
Anyone who has been following Newark’s politics over the past few months understands the
heat being generated by the coming school elections. Certainly the parents who showed up in
large numbers at the numerous candidates’ forums throughout the city to shout their
disagreements and demonstrate their concerns understand what is at stake in the coming election.
Normally, elections for membership on school boards do not often capture public interest…and
generally even the political establishments do not pay a lot of attention. But this election is
different. A lot is at stake. Mayor Booker is actively involved as is South Ward Councilman Ras
Baraka. Steve Adubato, the North Ward leader, is putting forward a slate of candidates.
Governor Chris Christie and his Education Commissioner Christopher Cerf are advocating
significant reforms in the Newark schools.
What is important to note from all this is not that one side or the other is right. It is likely that all
the participants…the politicians, the education establishment, the founder of Facebook, the US
Department of Education, the teachers, and the candidates themselves…are sincerely trying to do
what is best for Newark’s schools and children. However, they all have significantly different
approaches about how to achieve their goals. And the stakes in this election are extremely high,
not only because of the incoming $100 million gift from Mark Zuckerberg but also because of
the implications of creating more charter schools that will not only be more numerous than in the
past but also have access to existing public schools and public money.
For Newark residents, however, the issue is…or should be…simple. An important election is
coming up. The future of Newark’s children is on the table. Will they voters do their duty? Or
will they sit idly by while others determine what happens to their children in the coming years?
The people who show up at the polls on April 27 have the power to shape the destinies of their
children and their city. That is also a true statement.
