End the Interview Right and Get the Job

By Obi Okere

Many people will interview great, but fail to close it properly.  This is like offering a Christmas present without wrapping it.  Knowing how to close an interview properly can mean the difference between getting the job and being one of the unfortunate few people who receive a rejection letter in the mail.  This process has helped me and many of my clients land quality jobs. After asking all of the traditional interview questions, it is important to follow these 5 key steps to solidify your chances of getting the job.

1. Thank them for their time.

2. State how you feel about the job and why you feel that way (“I'm interested in the job because…”).  Use this opportunity to also state three reasons why you would be a fit for this position.

3. Ask: “Do you see me as a fit for this position?”  Be very sincere and direct as you ask this question.

4. If they say NO ask: “What are your major concerns about my qualifications?” Make sure that you listen without interrupting the interviewer.  Gather all of his or her objections about why you may not be a fit for the position.  Answer each objection with a reason why it should not be a concern for the interviewer.  Make sure that you finish this step by asking: “Have I answered all of your concerns about offering me this position?”  If the answer is NO, continue to address his or her objections.
If they say YES, ask: “Where do we proceed from here?” Or “What is the next step?”

5.  At this point many people fail to ask for the job.  Most assume that since they are there for the interview it is already assumed that they want the job.  Most companies will expect you to ask for the job during the interview. You may say something to the respect of the following:

“After everything we discussed, I really want this job. Where do we go from here?"

Or

“This opportunity matches my career goals and I know I can do a really great job for you. Who else do I have to convince to have you make me an offer?”

Make sure that you say this with a lot of conviction and enthusiasm.  Enthusiasm sells.
