Codey set to endorse Baraka in Newark mayoral race

NEWARK - Former Governor and current State Senator Richard Codey (D-27) will endorse South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka on Thursday in the Newark mayoral race, according to sources from the Baraka campaign.

Codey's nod to Baraka in the race to run the state's largest city is not a complete surprise. Codey appeared at a December campaign event for Baraka at the Robert Treat Hotel in downtown Newark. Former Mayor Ken Gibson, Newark's first African-American mayor, endorsed Baraka at the same event.

Codey is also no stranger to Newark politics. Before the 2011 legislative redistricting, Codey's 27th Legislative District included parts of the City of Newark.

Democrat Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, a longtime rival of Codey, in May endorsed North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos. The candidates include Ramos, Central Ward Councilman Darrin Sharif and former state Assistant Attorney General Shavar Jeffries.
