Newark program trains welfare recipients for ShopRite jobs

NEWARK -- Standing in the checkout line at ShopRite, Myeisha Wilson lost her temper when the cash register malfunctioned.
"How long is this going to take?" Wilson shouted as a beeping machine tried to process her check.
"It has to verify your account," the cashier, Krystal Gadson, replied with a smile. "It’ll only take two seconds."
Brushing her aside, Wilson snapped once more and headed to the exit.
But the incident ended with a twist: Wilson turned back and shared a laugh with Gadson.
"You handled that well," Wilson said, putting her items back on the shelves.
The two had just run the mock scenario inside a simulated supermarket in a modest brick building on Morris Avenue in Newark, part of a job training program that prepares welfare recipients for jobs at ShopRite stores throughout New Jersey.
Gadson and Wilson, both students in the program, run through the drills again and again, perfecting every part of the cashier’s role.
At a time of rising unemployment — Newark’s rate hit the 15 percent mark in September, the highest this decade — the program offers students a sure shot at a job.
Launched in 2000, the training center, run by the New Community Corp., has trained 800 people in its 16-week program, 766 of whom found work in ShopRite stores.
"Training programs in the U.S. are very interesting," said Monsignor William J. Linder, NCC’s founder. "At the end, you just get a certificate, not a job. It’s different here."
The training center was recently refurbished with the latest high-tech cash registers and is stocked with supermarket goods.
Students, most of whom are referred to the program by welfare caseworkers, learn the skills of the trade with computer tutorials on bagging groceries and handling angry customers.
"It’s a lot of things to remember," said Wilson, 26, of East Orange. "Different buttons you have to press and all the different transactions. You have to multitask."
Claudette Goode, the center’s training instructor, said many of her students also regularly faced trauma in their lives, making the learning process harder.
"I’ve seen people with mothers on drugs, or they’re facing evictions or they’ve been in homeless shelters with children," she said. "It’s unbelievable how many tears have been shed in my office."
The program’s requirements are also strict: students face penalties if they miss class and they must repeat certain tests if they make more than two errors.
"It’s very hands on, which is better," said student Gadson, 22, of Orange.
Gadson said most other job programs she participated in while on welfare did not train her as effectively as this one.
"There’s a job search program where you just sit in front of the computer for 16 weeks," she said. "Some people just play video games all day."
The program also helps ShopRite, which takes in trained and enthusiastic employees.
"We’ve had cashiers who’ve been promoted to customer service representatives and bookkeeping," said Tony Smutko, owner of the ShopRite on Route 22 in Hillside which has hired program participants. "They’re always ready to go."
Marty Glass, a senior manager at Wakefern Food Corp., ShopRite’s distribution arm, praised the program then handed over a $15,000 check to NCC at a ceremony at the center today.
"At any moment, we can renew ourselves and change our lives and that is what these associates are doing," he said, referring to the program’s students.
