NEWARK — An 18-year-old Newark man was shot and killed this morning in the city’s South Ward, authorities announced.

Gary Anderson was discovered in the vestibule of an apartment building around 1 a.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.

"It does not appear to be a random shooting," said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.

It was believed Anderson lived in the building, located on the 900 block of Frelinghuysen Avenue, according to Fennelly.

Anderson was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:32 a.m., prosecutors said.

The matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, and the investigation is ongoing at this time, Fennelly said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Task Force detectives at (877) 847-7432 or (973) 621-4586.
